Safe Space Yoga:
SSY has been on hold due to the Covid pandemic. I'll likely be resuming offerings beginning mid-2025.
I completed a Trauma-Sensitive Yoga Teaching Certificate Program through the Trauma Center at JRI in Boston, MA in 2008. Research shows that yoga is a powerful tool for healing trauma, but that many mainstream yoga classes contain elements that are triggering to people who have experienced traumatic events. Trauma-Sensitive yoga is designed so that potentially triggering elements are excluded as much as possible, and includes elements that increase grounding and enable students to be present.
The classes are designed to help participants feel safe in their bodies, to learn self-regulation skills, and to improve their ability to direct attention away from ruminative thought processes, in a safe, supportive and peaceful environment. No yoga experience is necessary. I strive to make the classes accessible to everybody regardless of physical ability.
My Safe Space Yoga classes are offered on a "session" basis, in which students sign up in advance for the entire 8-week session. Classes are held at the Durham Yoga Company.

Love Thy Body: Yoga for Eating and Body Image Concerns:
I periodically teach "Love Thy Body: Yoga for Eating and Body Image Concerns" groups. These are 4-or 8-session series that weave together yoga philosophy, Hatha yoga practice, journaling exercises, mindfulness meditation, and group discussion for a focus on shifting our relationships with our bodies from conflicted, anxious or ashamed to comfortable, relaxed and appreciative-- perhaps even reverent! These are held at my office.
The Spring 2020 series was canceled due to COVID19. I'll likely be resuming offerings beginning mid-2025.
Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy:
I received my certification as a Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy practitioner in 2002. PRYT is done in individual sessions. Sessions begin with centering and breathing exercises, then progress to supported postures accompanied by reflective dialogue, in which the practitioner creates and holds a space in which the client can connect to whatever internal experience comes to his or her attention. For some, this can be an emotionally potent experience, for others, one mainly of physical relaxation, and for others, a meditative, spiritual experience. The session wraps up with an integration process, in which the significant aspects of the session are connected to the client's current needs or goals.
Please note that Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy is not a form of psychotherapy. I don't do PRYT with my psychotherapy clients, and I don't practice psychotherapy with my PRYT clients. I am happy to recommend a psychotherapist to a PRYT client should they ask, or should I believe it would be a helpful means of addressing concerns that are beyond the scope of PRYT. I'm happy to recommend other PRYT practitioners to psychotherapy clients, as well.
Sessions last about 75 minutes, and cost $200. PRYT is not covered by insurance plans.
